The University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute conducts research through the University of Maryland School of Medicine in the field of motor recovery and rehabilitation. This research, funded through the VA Maryland Health Care System, is currently investigating the effects of integrating robotics into the rehabilitation of stroke patients. The Anklebot is a robot exoskeleton that can be used with patients in a seated position as they play computer-video games to improve motor control. A new adaptive controller has enabled use of the Anklebot in a treadmill based training to re-engineer mobility recovery.
