SUNY University at Albany College of Engineering and Applied Sciences
Building a College of Engineering From the Ground Up
"At the University at Albany, they are building a new college of engineering from the ground up. It will be fully featured, research-intensive, and encompass a wide range of disciplines (computer science, electrical and computer engineering, environmental and sustainable engineering, mechanical engineering, bioengineering…) with BS, MS, and PhD programs in each. The undergraduate programs will be broad-based, alongside robust graduate programs and an aggressive research agenda.
Unburdened by legacy issues, they are developing and “designing in” multidisciplinary connections across the college and across the campus. The emerging program in environmental and sustainable engineering, for example, is unique in the United States, uncoupled from traditional civil engineering, and addressing sustainable design and engineered intelligent spaces as part of its scope – fostering connections to ECE, CS, and other disciplines.
Although still in their infancy, they are expanding rapidly, and have been remarkably successful in attracting extraordinary talent to join their faculty from some of the most prestigious engineering schools in the country. They join UAlbany to take part in something special and unique, to deliver “Engineering Opportunity,” and to build a new tradition of excellence as they pursue the mission of “Science in Service to Society.”
