ROAD Safety
DENSO International America, Inc. and University of California Berkeley
Road safety is one of the major concerns for automated vehicles, which falls in the broad aspect of safety issues in human robot interactions. UC Berkeley developed the Robustly-safe Automated Driving system (ROAD) which prevents or minimizes occurrences of collisions of the automated vehicle with other road participants while maintaining efficiency, as a collaborative work between UC Berkeley and Denso International America Inc.
The ROAD system provides an intuitive framework to design the driving behavior of the automated vehicle, which can be easily tuned according to the passengers' preference. Moreover, it can also be used in driving an assistive system to compensate human driver's unsafe maneuvers. UC Berkeley and Denso will continue collaboration to make the system deployable in the future by automotive manufacturers.
