Toxicologic Pathology in a Regulatory Environment
Health Canada - Bureau of Chemical Safety, Food Directorate
In Health Canada’s Food Directorate, regulatory toxicology studies are conducted in the Bureau of Chemical Safety to produce original data and new knowledge to answer questions essential for identifying and characterizing adverse effects of chemicals that contaminate food on the health of humans, and the assessment of the probability of such hazards. The adverse effects in humans can range from acute to long-term. Long-term effects may lead to chronic diseases such as cancer, and reproductive, immune or nervous system disorders. The health effects data in association with exposure data are used to conduct health risk assessments, which are then used by the FD to manage and communicate risks, and to develop policy.
