National University Health System, Singapore - Department of Psychological Medicine
Training Minds for Success: A Hub for Academic Psychiatry in Asia
The National University of Singapore's Department of Psychological Medicine is a regional leader in psychiatric education, research and clinical service. The department combines academic excellence with top-quality clinical care for patients of all ages and all kinds of psychiatric needs, while training a new generation of great psychiatric care providers from throughout Asia and the world. The departments setting within a tertiary general hospital also allows for seamless coordination of care provision from childhood through adolescence to adult cases with skilled diagnostic and interventional procedures. The best standard of clinical care is delivered under the leadership and expertise of our highly trained multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses and case management officers. Care also extends to community outreach programmes including REACH WEST, ASCAT and G-RACE which caters for children, adults and geriatric patients respectively. The department has developed a comprehensive range of subspecialty services in Psychological Medicine with particular strength in Mood Disorders, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry. These areas of expertise have led to state-of-the-art research projects from insights into Singapore's multi-ethnic ageing population, a Dementia Prevention Programme, and studies on Psycho-oncology. To further strengthen their capabilities, the department forges collaborations and partnerships with international healthcare systems. Their location within a top university campus also allows for close academic collaborations with the bioscience community. The NUS Mind-Science Centre is an emerging centre of excellence to promote emotional resilience and to improve cognitive performance for both the well and at-risk population. As a university teaching hospital, NUS Department of Psychological Medicine engages in teaching psychiatry to the undergraduate medical students and postgraduate training for psychiatry and family medicine residents. Exposure to a medical- psychiatry unit and many complex cases further enhances the quality of teaching in the department. NUS Department of Psychological Medicine works hard to make an impact to all patients in their clinical service, to the future of practice in leading research projects, as well training a new generation of academic psychiatrists in the Asia region.
