Department of Materials Design and Innovation, University at Buffalo
State University of New York
The Department of Materials Design and Innovation is a new interdisciplinary department at the University at Buffalo that pushes the boundaries of traditional approaches in materials science research and education by harnessing the tools of materials informatics to link experimental and computational materials science. It’s transformative approach to pedagogy and research is based on fusing the principles of data science with materials science. MDI trains students to have interdisciplinary perspectives and the necessary skills and tools to be able to understand and apply computational tools for modelling, simulation and informatics, together with experimental driven science so that they have the ability to accelerate the pace of materials discovery and engineering design in a socially responsible manner. This new paradigm also impacts our research and teaching by facilitating an unusually broad range of partnerships that includes industry, policy makers, non-governmental.
