RemoveDEBRIS: Cost-efficient Solutions to Space Problems

Surrey Space Centre, based at the UK’s University of Surrey, has a long history at the cutting edge of space science and technology. Since its inception in 1979, Surrey Space Centre has been a world leader in the development of low cost, high quality small satellites for use throughout the space industry. With its unique end-to-end capability Surrey is able to take space missions from the design stage, through testing, building, launch as well as acquisition and use of data. Everything is covered within the centre, from engineering of satellite structure, building of sub-systems, environmental testing, assembly in a state-of the-art clean room, as well as a control room for managing a range of satellites in space. It’s their deep understanding of the needs of the space industry, as well as their capability to handle state-of-the-art projects that has led to their leading role in the RemoveDEBRIS mission. With a host of collaborators from across Europe, including SSTL and Airbus, RemoveDEBRIS is an experimental satellite which will test the technology required to find, catch and destroy debris from obsolete and broken satellites in earth’s orbit. RemoveDEBRIS is an example of Surrey Space Center’s forward thinking approach to space science. By giving students the opportunity to interact with some of the leaders in space science, and take their own projects from design to launch, SSC’s aim is to train the next generation of space scientists, ensuring a successful future for the industry all over the world. At the same time, SSC is working side-by-side with other countries, such as Nigeria, to share their knowledge and ensure access to space for everyone.
