Anaesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine, Mater University Hospital Dublin
Edging forward in cancer surgery: Could the anaesthetic contribute an incremental improvement?
The research unit for anaesthesiology & perioperative medicine at Mater University Hospital Dublin is at the forefront of worldwide research on how perioperative factors such as anaesthesia and analgesia might influence cancer recurrence and metastasis.
Recently, the team published results in the Lancet from a trial showing no difference between regional and general anaesthesia in breast cancer. Now the research unit is working together the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre on the new VAPOR-C Trial, which will test two other techniques in colorectal and lung cancer patients and is looking for funding so that European centres can participate.
Global research collaborations on the unit include Outcomes Research, Cleveland Clinic, OH, USA; Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthesiologists and NHMRC, and European Society Anaesthesiology Clinical Trials Network, and involvement in the EU COST Action "EURO-Periscope": European Platform for Investigation of Perioperative Interventions in Surgery for Cancer.
Other research interests of the team include perioperative interventions and postoperative outcomes, especially after hip fracture and myocardial injury after non-cardiac surgery (MINS).
