THE GLASS THAT IS ALWAYS HALF-FULL (signifying that in case of Bone Marrow Transplant, one of the parent is always a 50% match qualifying for a half-matched donor or Haplo-identical stem cell transplant).
Bmt is an underperformed procedure globally particularly in developing countries. One major reason is the limited availability of matched marrow donors. We embarked on a journey of haploidentical bmt since 2010. The trysts and travails in establishing the program and the associated research that led to over 100 transplants and numerous presentations and publications worldwide would be the highlight. The struggle and triumphs in the road to success, the participation, contribution and sacrifices of groups and individuals, both medical personnel as well as the patients and their family would be unravelled. Our story is one of innovation and scientific discoveries and proves the point that scientific breakthroughs are not just subject to financial resources. Major breakthroughs in science often happen out of necessity and ours is a case in point. The necessity and challenge lie in the fact that the most demanding treatments to offer a cure for blood disorders is being provided notwithstanding financial and logistic barriers.
