Hierarchical assemblies of molecular, cellular and multicellular structures pose significant challenges for our understanding while also provide inspiration for new soft, adaptive materials and devices. The Center for Cellular and Biomolecular Machines (CCBM) at the University of California Merced deploys an interdisciplinary approach cutting across scientific and engineering methodologies to pursue a fundamental understanding of the structure, dynamics and functioning of multi-scale biomolecular and cellular assemblies to the extent that it enables control of function in vivo; use these fundamental principles for designing and developing novel bio-inspired functioning machines ranging from designer cells and tissue to diagnostic and therapeutic devices; develop an integrated, interdisciplinary training program for graduate students that combines physical and biological components with horizontal supervision of research and training experiences aimed at enhancing career opportunities for underrepresented minorities in STEM fields.
Because transformative advances require integrated contributions from many different fields, CCBM features an interdisciplinary team that leverages the unique academic structure at UCM with few departmental boundaries to effectively integrate faculty from bioengineering, physics, materials science and engineering, chemistry and chemical biology
