Research Development and Innovation, Qatar Foundation - Partnerships Towards Precision Medicine Across Qatar.
The Qatar Genome Programme (QGP) is a population-based project aiming to position Qatar as a pioneer in the implementation of precision medicine. By combining whole genome sequencing and other omics data with the comprehensive phenotypic data found at the Qatar Biobank, the Qatar Genome Programme will provide one of the world’s strongest resources for genomics research.
Starting in 2015, the Qatar Genome Programme has now sequenced over 15,000 whole genomes. QGP stands out from other programmes through its population based approach – its access to data on a large number of deeply-phenotyped apparently-healthy individuals means the establishment of the Qatari Reference Genome Map, allowing researchers to identify those genes that are unique to the local population, as well as enabling policymakers to ensure healthcare is better focused on patients’ needs, as Qatar moves into the era of precision medicine.
QGP is focused on promoting genomic research within Qatar. With the support of Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) they have established the Path towards Personalized Medicine – providing funding for a range of exiting research projects. At the same time, the QGP Research Consortium brings together over 90 researchers from around the world to mine this unique collection of genomics data.
Research projects are already well under way. Coronary heart disease is an increasing problem in the Arabian Gulf region. In a collaboration with the Qatar Cardiovascular Biorepository (QCBio) at the Heart Hospital of Hamad Medical Corporation, QGP has recruited more than 1000 patients to determine the genetic determinants of cardiovascular disease.
Another key piece of research looks at Autism spectrum disorders – the causes of which are still largely unknown. Using the data found within the Qatar Genome Project, researchers will be able to form a better understanding of the mechanism behind this life-changing disorder.
To strengthen genomics research in Qatar, QGP is also working to build the human resources needed to drive it. QGP has initiated two graduate programs in collaboration with local universities, a Genetic Counseling MSc at Qatar University (QU) and a Genomic Medicine MSc/PhD program at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), ensuring the next generation of medical professionals will be at the forefront of precision medicine.
Through a unique and ever-growing database of rich genomic data, support for some of the world’s top researchers to investigate it, and partnerships with Qatar’s top academic institutions as well the Qatari government, the Qatar Genome Programme is driving Precision Medicine within the country, as well as helping researchers identify the genes behind some of the world’s most challenging disease, benefiting everyone.
