Genetics and Diversity: Focusing the Lens on Ancestry
The John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics and the Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation Department of Human Genetics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine are leaders in precision medicine and genomic research in Florida. Recent rankings have placed us as one of the top five genetic groups in the country. Our faculty are leaders in international translational research efforts including Alzheimer's disease, rare diseases, and precision medicine. Our unique location in the hyperdiverse community of South Florida positions us to study underserved populations. We house one of the largest genomic efforts to identify new genetic targets for therapy of Alzheimer disease. Our longstanding autism research program has contributed seminal findings applying a combination of genomics and iPSC approaches. Our rare diseases research and clinical efforts are amongst the strongest internationally and we are one of only 10 national clinical sites for the Undiagnosed Diseases Network. With a strong focus on our local diversity, we lead one of the ten All of US research program enrollment sites and are active members in the steering and other committees. Our faculty have access to state-of-the-art genomic technology from genomic sequencing, iPSC, animal modeling, computing and importantly, one of the oldest and largest academic biorepositories.
