Chicago’s Public Research University: Bridging Engineering & Medicine through Academic & Research Affiliations in a World Class City.
The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), ranked #7 nationwide for the best value in 2018 by the Wall Street Journal, is located in the heart of the vibrant city of Chicago. With more than 30,000 students, it is the largest public research university in the nation’s third largest city. UIC is one of a handful of universities nationwide that is both classified as a Carnegie I research institution and as a minority-serving institution: Hispanic (HSI) and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander (AANAPISI). The Richard and Loan Hill Department of Bioengineering, part of Engineering and Medicine at UIC, is one of the oldest Biomedical Engineering programs in the country (since 1965) serving 350 undergraduates, 75 Masters and 100 PhD students, including MD-PhD students. Thirty core and more than 100 affiliate faculty support its programs, offering focused training and research experiences in bioinformatics, cell & tissue engineering, neural engineering and rehabilitation, medical imaging, biomechanics, biomaterials, clinical translation and industry-ready skills. In this video, we highlight some of our unique interdisciplinary training opportunities, as well as cutting edge research opportunities open to both undergraduate and graduate students in our programs.
