The Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM)
Deakin University
At the forefront of innovation in materials design and engineering research.
The Institute for Frontier Materials is the place to come for innovative research in materials science. Our researchers work from fundamental to applied research from future fibres and light metal alloys to energy and advanced molecular modelling.
The Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM) at Deakin University was established to address some of the major challenges facing society through innovations in materials design and performance.
Our vision is to lead and inspire innovations in materials science and engineering that have a transformational benefit to society
Our aim is to develop new materials and structures that are affordable, and also have a low cost to society of manufacture, use and recycling. IFM can process and characterise materials across all scale lengths, from the atomic level in the manipulation of interfaces and surfaces through to entire structures (such as a model car). Our researchers bring together engineering, chemistry, materials science, physics, biology, mathematics and other disciplines to develop new materials and engineering solutions.
