An Independent Crime Lab in Houston
Houston Forensic Science Center
The City of Houston created the Houston Forensic Science Center as an independent, nonprofit, local government corporation designed to be responsive to the National Academy of Sciences 2009 recommendation that crime labs should be independent of law enforcement and prosecutorial branches of government. HFSC is overseen by a nine-member board of directors. In 2014, management of the Houston Police Department’s Crime Lab, Crime Scene Unit and parts of the Identification Division transferred to HFSC. Since then, HFSC has succeeded in decreasing turnaround times, eliminating backlogs and increasing productivity to meet higher demand.
