The Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba is making great strides in the research and treatment of Type 2 diabetes. It was first found in children in the 1980’s by Dr. Heather Dean who was a doctor at our hospital. Before that, it was thought children couldn’t develop Type 2 diabetes. That discovery has led to years of research to improve the care children with the disease receive and we have a number of researchers at our facility currently working on this. The disease is especially a concern in First Nation youth. We have discovered the best way to reach young people within the First Nation culture, is to actively involve them in both the research and treatment.
