The Division of Esophageal and Upper GI Surgery (EGI) at The University of Hong Kong offers comprehensive and holistic management for patients with esophageal and upper GI disorders. A recognized tertiary referral centre, both locally in Hong Kong and also accept referrals from all parts of Asia. For esophageal and gastric cancers, they have an established multidisciplinary team which provides the whole spectrum of diagnostic workup and therapies. As a surgical unit, the division performs endoscopic assessment including endoscopic ultrasound, also therapies such as endoscopic submucosal dissection for early esophageal and gastric cancers. EGI are among the first in the world to perform minimally invasive resection for esophageal and gastric cancers, and reports one of the lowest morbidity and mortality rates in the world. A multidisciplinary team assesses and treats cancers, and are involved in clinical trials on multimodality treatments, both locally and internationally. The Division also provides comprehensive management of benign foregut disorders, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease and motility disorders. They have our own functional foregut laboratory, and are equipped with the latest technologies for the work up and treatment of these diseases. They offer the full spectrum of treatments, such as fundoplications for GERD and POEM for motility disorders. Bariatric surgery has also grown significantly in the past years.
