Inter-University Accelerator Centre
A National facility for Accelerator-based basic and applied research within the University System of India
Accelerators for Knowledge /Accelerator based experimental facilities at IUAC for basic and applied research in the University system in India / A National facility for Accelerator based basic and applied research within University System of India
Inter-University Accelerator Centre is the first Inter-University Centre in India to provide front-ranking Accelerator based experimental facilities for research in areas such as Nuclear Physics, Materials Science, Atomic & Molecular Physics, Radiation biology and Accelerator Mass Spectrometry for users from university groups across India and abroad. It took birth as Nuclear Science Centre in 1984 and is funded by University Grants Commission under Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
Accelerators and advanced experimental facilities are put to use by researchers from Indian universities to probe the microcosm in the nanometer to femtometer size and nanosecond to zeptosecond timescale in Nuclear, Atomic and Molecular studies, fine tune surface and/or bulk properties of materials and to date samples of archeological and climatic interest, using heavy ions. The inception and initial years as Nuclear Science Centre and its further growth under the modified name of Inter-University Accelerator Centre has given an impetus to Research and Development in advanced areas in the University system, in training manpower in higher education and in paving the way for many more Inter-University Centres in other core areas in India.
