Hua Medicine: on call to fight diabetes in China
In recent years, China has become a major battlefield in the fight against Diabetes with over 120 million patients. At the same time, research suggests a difference in disease aetiology between China and western countries, as well as a population that has a different set of medical needs. This calls for a new approach as well as novel drugs in combating the disease.
Hua Medicine was founded in 2010 by Dr Li Chen, former CSO of Roche R&D in China. Dr Chen recognized the opportunity to advance diabetes care through synchronization of glucose signals in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients by targeting Glucokinase.
Hua Medicine is currently engaged in promising clinical research on HMS5552, a dual acting glucokinase activator, and was able to demonstrate in a recent Phase II study in China that HMS5552 (or Dorzagliatin) has some very attractive glycaemic control effects, as well as causing an improvement in whole body glucose disposition and reduction of insulin resistance.
Through this project, Hua Medicine has brought together global resources as well as the nation’s best researchers and investigators to search for a cure for diabetes. With in-depth knowledge of glucokinase and its role in glucose homeostasis, Hua Medicine has created an “A Team” in China to take this expertise from bench to bed side.
