Good Content is Platform Agnostic

Like many people I’ve been fascinated by the recent comings and goings at Yahoo! CEO Marissa Meyer has brought in an impressive line up of media heavy hitters and her latest recruit – star broadcaster Katie Couric – certainly gained a lot of attention.

It’s not just content she’s been investing in. Since joining the company in 2012 the new CEO has made over twenty acquisitions including Tumblr for an eye watering one billion dollars. She’s also created a mobile technology team of 400 people telling a recent conference, “we think of ourselves as mobile first – it is clear it is a wave large enough you can ride it to reinvention.”

Which has drawn the question from many people, is Mayer re-inventing Yahoo! as a media or as a technology company? And that question, it seems to me, misses the point.

Mayer is clearly right to invest heavily in high quality content. With so many alternatives out there people will only connect with providers who have something to say to them. More importantly, that the available content is platform agnostic.

It’s the same for us here at WebsEdge. I’m just back from Chicago where we were producing Anthropology TV for the American Anthropological Association. And that’s a field just brimming with content, more stories than most others. In any given day we were reporting on issues ranging from the Icelandic economy through to racial stereotyping of US Presidents. (Have a look at the content here)

Coupled with all that content was a real thirst for knowledge as well as thousands of Anthropologists from all round the world. People went to conference sessions; they watched feature films, and our news reports. They also tweeted, blogged and posted updates on facebook. There was even an art exhibition. All focused, as we say here at WebsEdge, on connecting issues and audiences.

Technology is progressing so fast and in ways we’ve never thought of and all businesses need to stay on top of that. But at the end of the day it’s both content, and a thirst for knowledge that drives us all forward.
