Here at WebsEdge we’re getting ready for our last conference tv production of the year. We’re off to San Francisco for the American Society for Cell Biology annual meeting and ASCB TV.  It’s been a busy year and much as we’re looking forward to ASCB we’re also looking forward to the Christmas holidays after it!

But before we go we need to put the finishing touches to our work with the Material Research Society. We’ve been producing MRS TV over in Boston and the week has gone incredibly well indeed. As well as the attendees at the event – some 4, 000 I think – over 10, 000 viewed the content on-line.

That’s a lot of viewers and certainly gives me food for thought. We’ve also noticed a large number of people watching the shows on tablets and other mobile devices. And the number of people from different countries tuning in is on the rise as well. And all these folks are watching for longer too – no surfing here!

So given the competition for our attention why are so many people watching our content in this way? I think we’re seeing a really interesting pattern emerge. The long talked about decline in traditional tv just isn’t happening. Whether it’s the NFL or X Factor that’s your bag viewing figures are always on the up. And yet at the same time our very specific content is also registering more and more views.

And technology itself is also driving developments. We’re witnessing the emergence of smart televisions in our living rooms allowing people to access on-line video on their tv’s. In addition we’re also welcoming the addition of the ‘second screen’ as people comment on what they’re watching using their smart phones etc.

So how do we make sense of all these developments? Technology is certainly driving change. But instead of killing traditional content it’s actually encouraging it. So instead of passively waiting to see whatever the networks will serve up viewers are going after the specific content they want to see. And therefore watching more of it.

So what of the future? Well, I think we’re going to see an ever closer link between content providers and viewers – as we say at WebsEdge, linking issues with audiences.Sneakers

Good post. I learn something totally new and challenging on websites I stumbleupon everyday. It's always interesting to read through content from other authors and use a little something from other sites.
